Snoop Dogg (born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. on October 20, 1971) is one of the most popular people on the planet, having spent the last three decades as an international figure with massive success in the realms of music, film, finance, and more. In addition to being an undisputed hip-hop icon, Snoop Dogg is also a genuinely interesting person, even venturing into gaming, being playable in many popular titles including recently being added to the Call of Duty titles Warzone and Vanguard. The star acquired Death Row Records in 2022 from MNRK Music Group before releasing his latest studio album and starting the ball rolling on a biopic about himself.

Snoop Dogg himself recently commented on the upcoming biopic via Deadline, “I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind.” He went on, adding that, “It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.” Snoop Dogg isn’t the first major personality to see Universal as a perfect union, with notable filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan being such a fan that he convinced Christopher Nolan to switch.

Donna Langley, chairman of Universal, also commented on the collaboration, extolling Snoop’s value as an icon, and Universal’s longstanding interest. “Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture,” Langley said. “We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.” Universal is no stranger to such an undertaking, having produced the higly lauded NWA doc Straight Outta Compton directed by F.Gary Gray, who has been pegged to direct an upcoming film adaptation of Saints Row.

Coincidentally, Snoop Dogg also featured in the Straight Outta Compton project due to his close association with Dr. Dre, with the two being close enough that Snoop can confirm Dr. Dre’s upcoming projects, such as Dr. Dre making music for the next Grand Theft Auto game. Snoop’s aspirations for Death Row records, which are now coming to fruition, have been long thought-out by the star. In an interview with GQ, the now-owner of the company said, “I wanted to be the CEO of Death Row Records and basically take over the merchandise and rerelease their music, do documentaries, and possibly do my life story.” As it stands, the upcoming biopic is one item off the list crossed off.
