The comedy show focused on Ye after the musician sought new partnerships in the aftermath of Adidas’ decision to end its business relationship with him after he made a string of antisemitic comments, including that he was “going death con 3 on Jewish people.”
After the Adidas deal was terminated, Ye arrived at Skechers’ headquarters in Los Angeles before being denied a meeting. He was then escorted out of the building.
SNL chose to spoof this moment of the ongoing saga with a fake advertisement for the shoe company.
Cecily Strong, as Skechers marketing director Diane Cunningham, said: “Here at Skechers, we pride ourselves on two things: making stylish, comfortable shoes at an affordable price, and having zero tolerance for antisemitism.
“Like the rest of the country, we were appalled by Kanye’s horrific comments and we vowed to never work with him in any capacity. But, can we also point out that of all the companies he could have approached and been rejected by, he chose Skechers.”
The advert then switched to employees sharing their smug thoughts about Skechers rejecting Ye.
Chloe Fineman’s Skechers employee said: “Kanye came to Skechers, and Skechers said no. Do you realize how insanely satisfying that is?”
Strong returned with a declaration of her elation at the turn of events, adding: “I actually feel high like I think this is what cocaine feels like.”
As the fake advert came to a close, Bowen Yang’s Skechers employee asked who would be willing to partner with Ye, before James Austin Johnson answered as 2020 election denier Mike Lindell.
Johnson, as Lindell, said: “Hey it’s me, Mike Lindell, founder of MyPillow and I’m happy to announce we are starting ties with Kanye West, effective immediately.”
On Weekend Update, Jost and Che made a series of jokes about Ye, referencing the amount of companies that have cut ties with the rapper and his Yeezy shoes.
Jost said: “Is it just me or did half of the companies that dropped Kanye sound fake? I saw the headline, ‘TJ Maxx cuts Yeezy-branded merchandise amid Kanye West fallout.’ I was like, did Kanye know he worked for TJ Maxx?”
Che joked about Adidas’ decision to stop making Yeezy shoes, adding that “fans of Yeezy say it’s the worst thing to happen to them since any puddle.”
While SNL took aim at Kanye, the cast also made several jokes about Republicans Dr. Mehmet Oz, Kari Lake and Herschel Walker - all running for election in the Midterms.
In the cold-open Mikey Day as Pennsylvania Senate nominee Oz, and Strong as election denier Arizona Governor nominee Lake were asked about how they had managed to establish themselves in their respective races.
Oz was asked by Heidi Gardner’s Judy Woodruff how he had managed to close the once substantial gap between himself and Democrat John Fetterman.
He responded: “Let’s remember I was a long shot, Judy, but I always told myself, you can win this election if you’re honest if you’re fair and if your opponent has a debilitating medical emergency. So, we’re very lucky.”
Strong responded to questions about her appeal, adding: “Because I’m normal Judy. I’m just a regular hometown gal, constantly in soft focus and lit like a ’90s Cinemax softcore. And frankly, I’ve just clicked with the many wonderful, terrified elderly people here in Arizona, the Florida of the West. Also, I’m a fighter. In my life, I’ve sent back over 2,000 salads and I’m not afraid to do the same thing with democracy.”
During the Weekend Update segment, Michael Che took aim at Walker’s abortion-related scandal.
He said: “Herschel Walker denied allegations from a second woman that he pushed her to have an abortion, saying ‘I’m done with this foolishness.’ Which is also what Walker says when he takes off the condom.”
Newsweek has contacted Walker, Lake and Oz’s campaigns as well as Skechers for comment.
