During a Twitch-sponsored interview between television host Geoff Keighley and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, it was confirmed that Snake’s return wasn’t “likely” to happen in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. While Kojima failed to completely rule out a reprising role for the cardboard box aficionado, gamers shouldn’t get their hopes up.
While this does paint a rather grim outlook on the character’s future within the fighting franchise, it’s possible that Kojima is just saying this to mislead consumers. He even goes so far as to call out the creator of Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai, more or less hinting that Snake’s return is entirely in the hands of Nintendo.
It wouldn’t be the first time the legendary developer pulled the wool over his fans’ eyes — although the entire The Phantom Pain charade was much more organized — so maybe Kojima is doing it once more in an effort to keep gamers guessing.
Snake never really fit in with the rest of the Super Smash Bros. combatants in his Brawl debut, but the character was an exciting (if not completely unexpected) addition to the roster and it’d be a shame if he was left out. That said, there hasn’t been much Metal Gear content released on Nintendo platforms as of late, and there are currently no plans to bring anything MGS-related to the Wii U or 3DS. With all of this in mind, he did make our list of top 5 fighters unlikely to return for a reason.
