While it appeared during the heyday of MOBA games and stood as an interesting alternative to those who did not want to pursue League of Legends or DOTA 2, interest in Smite is not as high as it once was. But it is by no means a dead game, and Hi-Rez is not passive in its addditions to the game or its marketing, as one slightly misguided Twitter campaign shows.

Hi-Rez attempted to get a questionaire trending on Twitter for Smite players to talk about their favorite gods or other divine beings to play in the game. The questionaire asked them to list their favorite god, god that grew on them, most underrated god, and the god they most want to master. An innocent question for a MOBA player, but since it was talking about, well, gods, Twitter took the prompt and ran with it. It turns out these nonspecific questions were not as well thought out as Hi-Rez’ work at home policy.
Many replies had nothing to do with Smite at all, instead focusing on whatever god the Twitter user in question wanted to talk about. Gods both famous and lesser known were brought up as favorites, for varying reasons. Far from the hype for Smite that something like a trailer for a new god would bring, the prompt mostly brought a lot of funny responses about God, or gods. And in some cases, Godzilla and his immediate nemeses, because why limit answers to actual gods when not even Smite actually does that.
Many people responding to the prompt did not even understand why “favorite god” was trending in the first place, being completely unfamiliar with Smite. Rather than praising one of Smite’s newcomers like Tiamat, they were praising Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of God from Bruce Almighty.
To fully list all the best responses would take all day, but there are some great ones out there. Hopefully, some of those who were not familiar with the origin of the prompt will learn about Smite and its deific roles. And hopefully some Smite players will learn all about other gods, like Warhammer’s Grandfather Nurgle.
Smite is free-to-play on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
