While the game launched in 2012 to critical acclaim and sold impressively for a new franchise, it failed to meet the publisher’s sales expectation and, tragically, its developer United Front Games shut down for good in late 2016 after canceling both a sequel to Sleeping Dogs and an online spin-off titled Triad Wars.

While Sleeping Dogs has left little more than a cult following as its legacy, one such dedicated fan is no other than Donnie Yen, accomplished martial artist and star of films such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the Ip Man film series. In March 2017, Yen announced that he was teaming up with producer Neal H. Moritz and his production company Original Film, which is responsible for such blockbusters as I Am Legend and the Fast & Furious franchise, to produce a feature film adaptation of United Front Games’ 2012 video game, with Yen himself staring as the game’s protagonist, Wei Shen.
While updates on the film’s production have amounted to a deafening silence since 2018, when Yen confirmed that the film was starting production, Donnie Yen has indicated that Sleeping Dogs may just be his next project. In a post made on the Chinese social media network Weibo, Yen alluded to the fact that he was preparing for his next big role and even included a hashtag referencing “sleepingdog,” as pointed out by Asia market industry analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter.
If Sleeping Dogs, which seems to be a passion project for the actor, truly is Donnie Yen’s next big film, it will surely be officially announced soon, as all of the currently announced staff attached to the project all operate mainly in English-language film productions.
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
